FIFA World 2026 Cup Group Stage

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be the largest World Cup in history, featuring 48 national teams from around the globe. Hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, the tournament introduces a new format designed to provide more matches and opportunities for teams to compete on football’s biggest stage.

In the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage, 48 teams will compete across 12 groups of 4 teams each. Every team will play three group-stage matches, with 32 teams advancing to the knockout rounds. The expanded format promises the most inclusive and exciting World Cup ever, bringing together more nations and more football than any previous edition. ⚽🏆

Each group will have a total of 6 matches.

Which Teams Advance?

At the end of the group stage:

  • The top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically qualify for the knockout stage.
  • The 8 best third-placed teams across all groups also advance.

This means:

  • 12 group winners
  • 12 group runners-up
  • 8 best third-place teams

Total advancing teams: 32

Knockout Stage

The tournament then moves to a Round of 32, followed by:

  1. Round of 32
  2. Round of 16
  3. Quarter-finals
  4. Semi-finals
  5. Third-place Playoff
  6. Final

Total Number of Matches

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will feature 104 matches, up from 64 matches in the previous 32-team format.

Why the New Format Matters

The expanded format offers several benefits:

  • More nations get the opportunity to participate.
  • Greater global representation.
  • More matches for fans to enjoy.
  • Increased chances for emerging football nations to make a deep tournament run.

At the same time, the competition remains intense, as teams must perform consistently across three group-stage matches to secure a place in the knockout rounds.
