West Indies defeated Pakistan by 90 runs in the first Test in Trinidad, as Pakistan’s batting collapsed under sustained pace pressure on the fourth day.
Chasing 211, Pakistan were dismissed for 120 in 40.2 overs shortly after tea. They fell to 71 for 9 before captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Abbas added 49 for the final wicket. Babar remained unbeaten on 58, while Abbas made 23 before Jayden Seales sealed the win with a leg-before decision.
Seales finished with 5 for 20 in the second innings, while Justin Greaves claimed two wickets and completed the match with figures of 7 for 39. Greaves was named Player of the Match for his all-round contribution.
“It was just about being disciplined,” Greaves said.
Pakistan had already lost control in the first innings, slipping from 244 for 3 to 282 all out and conceding a 29-run deficit. Although Mohammad Abbas responded with an excellent 5 for 22 to bowl West Indies out for 181, the target proved too difficult on a deteriorating surface.
Pakistan’s batting problems continue
Pakistan’s defeat was their fourth consecutive Test loss and their eighth straight defeat away from home. They have now lost 13 of their last 17 Tests.
Babar admitted Pakistan failed to build meaningful partnerships against the West Indies attack.
The second and final Test will begin on Sunday at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, where Pakistan will look to level the two-match series.
